The pitch
Holden is HiberTec’s founder and CEO. Mikke Pierson is a former mayor of Malibu who saw the Woolsey fire up close. On stage they had a scale model and a cutaway of the system: when a wildfire or tornado threatens, the home lowers into a reinforced underground vault, a protective cover seals the opening, and the utility connections stay attached as it moves. Families evacuate. Nobody rides the house down. When the danger has passed, the home rises back to ground level.
The idea was years in the making by then: a cartoon on the back of a math worksheet, then engineering drawings, a team of engineers and architects, and three issued U.S. utility patents.
